The Programme

Qualified lawyers who trained with city firms and who have taken a break from their careers will be invited to join a six month programme with one of the participating firms. The application process launches in September and successful applicants will begin work in January 2019.

The Academy is open to anyone who trained with a city firm and who is looking to return after a career hiatus.  The doors will be open to people who have taken a complete career break and also to those who have not had complete breaks but who have been under-employed or taken positions considerably below their potential, often due to the barriers faced when re-entering the workforce after a career break.

Applicants need not have trained at one of the founder firms and will be provided with a comprehensive induction, training and coaching programme to support their return.

There will be three phases during this initial pilot:

Phase 1:
Applications

The founding members have identified a number of practice areas where there are opportunities for returning lawyers.

After initial screening, successful applicants will be invited to a face to face workshop where they will have the opportunity to learn more about what’s involved. Coaching on interview preparation, CV writing and LinkedIn profiling will also be provided.

Phase 2:
Offer, induction and training

Successful candidates will be offered a six month contract with their chosen member firm. The Academy will then focus on delivering the right training to candidates and clients in order to make their six month experience a success.

Personal induction and preparation:

  • Creating a 90 day onboarding, induction and “reignite” plan
  • Building individual personal learning plans
  • Managing upwards
  • Building a network to succeed
  • De-railers – managing the transition

  • Commonly used processes and procedures

  • Focused on bringing up to speed on the relevant area

Phase 3:
Ongoing Support

We know that people returning from a career break or returning to a different and more high pressure work environment benefit enormously from being part of a cohort. They also need and benefit from one to one coaching to help manage the transition.

Phase 3 is about providing that coaching and support environment.
